Miyeoji Baengdui
"Miyeoji Baengdui" is a Jeju dialect term that refers to the space between the living world and the afterlife. This work explores the sense of homogeneity between the real world and the virtual world of the internet, which exists yet does not exist, through digital light. The work "Miyeoji Baengdui" was first performed in 2015 and is scheduled to meet audiences again in 2024 in the Metaverse.
Miyeoji Baengdui
Digital Kut Performance
People are more connected, yet more alone, in this digital society. The Korean ‘Kut’, an old shamanic ritual still in effective use, is one such communal gathering and healing. ‘Miiyeoji-Baengdui’ is the term used in Jeju-Kut, indicating the space between the material and spiritual worlds where a shaman inhabits for healing purposes. It is the space that is there but untouchable, like the digital light that bathes us but is elusive to grasp.
This piece is inspired by this interesting resemblance. By linking digital projection light directly to rituals, the aim is to steer the control of this new medium towards the meaningful evocation of the world beyond, in which humanity is bathed but unaware. The artistry of Kut is lit up by the digital projection lights, and the shaman’s singing and dancing light up our soul and mind.
